stevenfiji The only mammal capable of true flight, a 'Beka Sigasiga' (known as 'Samoan Flying-fox' in English AKA a bat) hangs from the branch of a pawpaw tree as it surreptitiously approaches the fruit. The claw marks of numerous bats who regularly visit this tree are visible along the branches. I took this shot on my roof at home in Fiji for a story about how Flying-foxes are regularly consumed and considered a delicacy in Fiji despite being one of the region's most ecologically important animals.
Steven Saphore is a documentary photographer and environmental photojournalist from the Fiji Islands.
In 2012, I created World In Infrared, an innovative art/science/humanities project that aims to offer groundbreaking shifts of perspective on a range of global issues through the use of infrared light in photojournalism, commercial & editorial photography. I hack existing cameras into infrared-sensitive recording devices with the ability to capture a surreal (yet scientifically accurate) spectrum far removed from normal reality.
