BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI - While filming "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" in Michigan, the cast and crew spent time building bat houses to help save bats from a potentially devastating evil which is threatening their existence. Those bat houses are now up for auction.
White Nose Syndrome:
Bats are very important to the planet's ecosystem. They eat millions of bugs every night allowing farmers to use less pesticide on food. Millions of insect eating bats are dying each year because of a disease called White-nose Syndrome. The fungus grows on bats while they hibernate during the winter.
Zack Snyder's bat houses idea:
While driving from his home in Wisconsin to Michigan to film "Batman v Superman," director Zack Snyder heard about White Nose Syndrome on NPR. He then went in search of a bat expert and found Rob Mies from Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills. Snyder partnered with Cranbrook in his quest to help raise awareness and save the bats. See video below of Mies discussing working with Snyder and the cast as they made the bat houses.

The bat houses:
Each bat house allows hundreds of healthy bats a safe place to stay to raise their babies and repopulate. Snyder and the cast and crew of the movie constructed more than 100 bat houses out of actual material used for sets from the filming of the movie.
Each house went up for auction on eBay on March 21. Just search for them. You have until April 4 to bid. Some have the option to "buy now."
Many of the bat houses are autographed by Ben Affleck and Zack Snyder. All of the bat houses are fully functional. You can put it outside or keep it inside as a souvenir. If you put it outside for bats to use, it should be placed about 15 feet high on a pole. Choose a sunny location on the east or south facing side of your house. Bat houses work best with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight with morning sun preferable.
