VALE HELEN LUCKHOFF. In a world when the term is overused, a genuine “Wildlife Warrior” Helen Luckhoff, recently passed away. Helen was a pioneer in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, particularly flying-foxes and bats. She was the co-founder of Brisbane based group ONARR (Orphaned Native Animal Rear & Release) in the early 80s. At a time when most orphaned native animals, especially bats, were being regularly euthanased simply because no-one knew how to raise them, Helen’s dogged perseverance resulted in the establishment of a small band of fellow bat-lovers, from which other groups eventually grew. Helen was a recipient of many awards, and cited as an authority on bat behaviour in numerous scientific papers.
Attached is a tribute in the latest ONARR newsletter. Helen’s friends at Batreach mourn her passing.
